Latoya Louallen is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The
Resilie’nce Project, Inc. (TRP) — a transformative nonprofit born
from lived experience, unwavering faith, and an unshakable
commitment to breaking cycles that have long devastated underserved
communities.
Wrongfully convicted, Latoya served several years in prison for a
crime she did not commit. What could have broken her, strengthened her. When Latoya was
rightfully released, she emerged a woman changed for the better.
During her incarceration, she witnessed a familiar, painful, and recurring pattern: many of the
young women around her — primarily young Black women — came from neighborhoods where
generational poverty, violence, gang involvement, drug addiction, sexual exploitation, teen
pregnancy, and limited access to education or opportunity are the norm. Experiences such as
these are not isolated stories. They are reflections of communities continuously overlooked and
underserved — ones where systemic barriers and biases lead to the stigmas and labels that
perpetuate an endless cycle of oppression.
Rather than surrender to despair, Latoya chose to listen, lead, and learn. Her pain was
transformed into passion and to what she now knows is her life’s purpose — to break this cycle
affecting far too many individuals, families, and communities familiar to her.
She began to informally mentor fellow inmates, speaking life into women who had rarely been
seen and heard, let alone told they mattered. She shared her own story, her mistakes, her hopes,
and her determination to rise above circumstances — even as her own appeals were uncertain.
Inside prison walls, she saw clearly what was missing on the outside: early intervention,
consistent support, safe spaces to feel seen and heard, and guidance that helps individuals move
in a positive direction.
During her years incarcerated, Latoya developed a deep and personal relationship with God. Her
faith became her anchor. Through prayer, reflection, and spiritual growth, she tapped into
something lying deep within her — resilience. This, she found, is not just the ability to endure; it
is the courage to transform pain into power and rise intentionally. This has evolved into the belief
that all individuals possess an innate resilience that can lead one from merely surviving to
thriving.
After her release, Latoya turned her lived experience into action by founding The Resilie’nce
Project, Inc. TRP exists to disrupt cycles of incarceration, violence, and hopelessness by
providing mentorship, early intervention, resources, and empowerment programming for youth
and young adults. The mission of TRP is clear: to help young individuals impacted by the justice
system tap into their innate resilience and guide them to transform their pain into passion,
purpose, and positivity.
Ms. Louallen’s leadership is defined by authenticity, compassion, and conviction. She does not
speak about resilience from theory — she embodies it. Guided by these principles, The
Resilie’nce Project, Inc. is building pathways where barriers once stood and helping others
discover that their story is not over — it is just beginning.
